Boba is a chewy tapioca pearl commonly used in drinks, originating from Taiwan. Recently, coffee chains such as Dutch Bros and Starbucks began implementing popping boba on their menus. From a PR perspective, the addition of this new topping has the opportunity to bring a new audience into the stores.
In March, Dutch Bros implemented a new topping – popping boba to their menu for a limited time. Featured drinks included the Fire Lizard Rebel with Strawberrry Boba, Berry Lemonade with Strawberry Boba, Vanilla Freeze with Vanilla Boba, and the Caramel Chai with Vanilla Honey Boba.
With the addition of this new topping, customers are ecstatic to give it a try.
More recently, Starbucks released Summer-Berry Starbucks Refreshers with raspberry flavored pearls. The drinks are bright blue, each with a different base such as water, lemonade, and coconut milk. The term pearls causes some drama, as the company is avoiding the origin of boba tea.
